Preludio was born in 2014 to bring the love for Capri and for quality Italian craftsmanship to globetrotters sailing the Mediteranean.
Founded by Maria Renata Fimiani, an Italian architect from Naples, Preludio represents her passion and love for the coast, for Capri, where Maria Renata grew up spending her summers, and for the island's iconic bottegas.
Maria Renata married her interests in architectural design with her love and deep affection for Capri, to recreate the experience of a bottega by building a wooden trunk whose treasures inside were all of the materials needed to craft the traditional Capri sandal.
This trunk would become a so-called “saling trunk” which together with cobblers, would travel from boat to boat and coast to coast bringing the art of sandal making to international guests aboard.
At the same time, Maria Renata opened a school dedicated to teaching and passing on the knowledge of this craftsmanship to other artisans, with the goal of making the experience of the “sailing trunk” available to more and more people.
Over the years, Preludio evolved to find a spot on land and opened the doors of its very own bottega in 2018 in the coastal town of Monte Argentario followed by several pop-up boutiques at La Rinascente’s locations in Milan, Florence and Rome. Today, Renata wants to bring the unique experience of the Preludio sandal online, in hopes to make it available to not only those in Capri or off the coast of Capri, but to everyone around the world.
Welcome to Preludio. We are committed to bringing the beauty of quality Italian craftsmanship to you, on land or at sea.
We are artisans celebrating the beauty of thoughtfully hand-crafted Capri sandals.
We grew up watching cobblers shape each sandal, one by one, with absolute love and care. Their knowledge used to be passed down from generation to generation, but as time goes by, this precious knowledge is slowly getting lost.
We believe in the importance of keeping traditions alive and want to be able to share them with you.
We were born next to the sea and the materials we use come from this very earth. We are so grateful for the beauty that surrounds but know that unfortunately it is under constant threat.
By working with the right materials, we hope to take a helpful step in the preservation of our planet.
Our soles are produced by the Italian organization "Consorzio Cuoio di Toscana” that guarantees high quality environmental standards and uses the vegetable tanning process.
We are continually working to understand and improve our environmental impact and want to bring you along to take part and experience our sustainable path.
We custom-make your sandals to make each pair unique while avoiding stock waste and keeping in mind our environmental impact.
Our goal was to create a plastic free sandal and we were able to make it happen. Our soles are crafted using natural leather, pine wood, linen and a final wax finish for protection. Instead of using plastic, each sole is delicately brushed to prevent you from slipping on the ground.
Our jewels are made of glass and specially designed nickel-free metal cases to protect your skin.
Your sandals will arrive at your doorstep in a delicate cotton bag to ensure maximum protection during their journey to you.
